Best Employers for workers over 50

Best Employer Award

Every year AARP announces the award for the best employers for workers over 50. The complete list of winners include 50 companies from around the country who show exemplary practices for recruiting and retaining mature employees. The list includes companies from a variety of industries including nonprofit, for-profit, universities and universities. The award is cosponsored by The Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), and since it’s inception in 2001, every year companies are recognized for being ahead of the curve.

The Winner in 2013

In 2013 The National Institute of Health (NIH) tops the list of recipients which was announced on June 17, 2013 at the (SHRM) annual conference in Chicago. The NIH is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Services and it is the nation’s medical research agency. According to NIH, they are “the largest source of funding for medical research in the world, creating hundreds of thousands of high-quality jobs by funding thousands of scientists in universities and research institutions in every state across America and around the globe.” NIH is made up of 27 centers each focusing on a specific research agenda about particular diseases.

The Selection Process

You might wonder how the selection process works for the Best Employer Award for workers over 50. I sure did and here is what I found out. The top 50 winning organizations had to submit an application showing their entire human resource practices and policies. The areas of consideration were the following:

  • Recruiting practices
  • Opportunities for training, education and career development
  • Workplace accommodations
  • Alternative work options, such as flexible scheduling, job-sharing and phased retirement
  • Employee health and pension benefits
  • Benefits for retirees

First and independent survey firm evaluated all the applications based on guidelines developed by the AARP’s research staff. The initial ratings by the survey firm is then sent to AARP and to a panel of independent judges that compromise private sector, government and nonprofit labor experts.
