2012 promises to be an eventful year in Walnut Creek real estate, with a number of development projects moving from the drawing board toward groundbreaking and construction. As the year unfolds I’ll periodically be taking a look at the changes on the horizon for our local skyline. First up is one of the most ambitious residential projects to have been approved by the city’s planning department: North Main Apartments, a 126 unit complex slated for construction on the site of the old Walnut Creek Motor Lodge at 1960 North Main Street.
Designed by architect Ron Metzger for noted developer Mill Creek Residential Trust, this four-story apartment community will occupy 1.20 acres and offer 170 parking spaces for residents. As I see it, North Main Apartments promises to give a much-needed boost to commuter-friendly housing in the heart of Walnut Creek. It’ll be located just a few minute’s walk down Ygnacio Valley Rd from the BART station and an equally quick drive from highway 680. And its central location on North Main St. is conveniently located right down the street from Target and within easy reach of all the attractions of downtown Walnut Creek.
As you can see from the illustration below, the apartments will combine an understated, contemporary style with plenty of light from ample windows and the breezy charm of balconies on outward-facing units.I’ll be revisiting this major addition to our community as construction moves forward and it begins to take shape at the corner of North Main St and Ygnacio Valley Rd. Stay tuned for an exciting year in Walnut Creek real estate!
