One of the gems of Walnut Creek is the Ruth Bancroft Garden located a 1552 Bancroft Road in Walnut Creek. That’s between Ygnacio Valley Road and Treat Blvd. Three or four times a year, they have plant sales. During the year they also have classes to help local Walnut Creek and the surrounding area residents, fertilize and care for drought resistant plants.
The Ruth Bancroft Garden started as a working ranch in the 1880′s. Besides growing fruit trees and the like, Herbert Bancroft built a tremendous personal library that became one of the cornerstones for the Bancroft Library on the campus of University of California in Berkeley.
Well, fast forward to the 1960′s when residential development in Walnut Creek was booming. The Bancroft family sold off a good amount of their land, but kept a portion to grow these working gardens that provide education and beauty to our community of Walnut Creek.
You can wander the gardens on your own or take a docent tour. Purchase plants, take classes or just photograph the beautiful plants. The Ruth Bancroft Garden .
